A newspaper published in the aftermath of the sinking of the Titanic has been unearthed in a wardrobe. The edition of The Daily Mirror from 20 April 1912, which shows a photo of two women waiting for the list of survivors to be posted on a wall in Southampton, was found in a house in Lichfield, Staffordshire, after 112 years.

[The newspaper was auctioned off for £34 ($44)]

A group of divers working off the coast of Scotland found the wreck of what’s believed to be a World War I ship that sank with more than 500 sailors on board. The HMS Hawke was torpedoed by a German U-boat on Oct. 15, 1914, according to Lost in Waters Deep, a U.K. agency that memorializes naval losses from World War I. The Royal Navy warship caught fire and sank in fewer than eight minutes, according to CBS News partner the BBC, with just 70 sailors surviving. In total, 524 sailors died when the ship sank near northern Scotland.

A new museum on the Seattle waterfront is bringing a historical event back to the surface like never been before. “Titanic: The Exhibition” opened this summer on Alaskan Way and offers an immersive experience into the heart of the fateful ship. There is a model of the ship with cut-outs that give a glimpse of how the ship looked inside and how everything was laid out, but the best parts of the exhibition are the life-sized recreations of the various spaces onboard. You get a chance to see the huge differences between the first-class and third-class rooms (even the tableware was significantly different). Walking down the ornate first-class hallway gives you a real “you were there” moment. There is also a recreation of the wireless cabin known as Marconi Room, where Morse Code was used to help save the lives of those who fled the ship.

Harland & Wolff is at risk of losing out on a £120m contract to redevelop a major port in the Falkland Islands, in what marks the latest struggle for the embattled company. But as it battles to stave off collapse after the new Labour government refused to guarantee a vital £200m loan, officials in the Falkland Islands are reconsidering the decision.

After his reputation was left in ruins, Ismay, who had been exonerated from blame in the Titanic disaster by a British inquiry faced public scorn, with incidents of him and his wife being mocked in the streets of both the UK and the US. In 1913, the Lancashire-born mogul and his partner, Julia, sought solace in Connemara, making their new home at Costello Lodge in Casla. Locals in the Irish-speaking region of Co Galway greeted the Ismays warmly, seeing them as employers and remarking on their generous nature. Nonetheless, J Bruce was given the moniker “Bru sios me”, an Irish phrase meaning “lower me down,” a nod to his infamous role in the Titanic saga regarding lifeboat provision.

(Note this article gets some basic facts wrong about the lifeboats on Titanic. It directly says that Ismay declined a Board of Trade request for more lifeboats and slashed them. However, the number of lifeboats did meet (and exceed) the then Board of Trade rules which used tonnage rather than the number of people aboard for setting the number of lifeboats. It did turn out later White Star wanted to reduce the number so they would not clutter up the deck, but that didn’t occur. Ismay did reject adding more lifeboats for that reason (cluttering up the deck).

TACKY TITANIC ALERT!

You know there have been a lot of tacky Titanic products over the years. Titanic shaped ice cube maker so you can have the ship in your cocktail. And don’t forget the infamous Titanic slide. Shaped like Titanic in its final moments, you can slide down on it in your backyard. So, it seems fitting they got around to the iconic end scene in James Cameron’s Titanic. You know what I am talking about. It is the scene where our heroes, Jack and Rose, are in the water. Rose is able to get on a floating door, but Jack cannot jump on as it may not hold the both of them. Well, the folks at SCS Direct decided to create a door float inspired by the movie so you can find out if both could have been saved. It sells for $35 on Amazon (note the price is subject to change) and appears to have some good things said about it.

Here are a few things posted about it on Amazon:

“My son wanted this for Christmas last year & im so glad I got it for him! First off, when it comes in the box, it’s HEAVY. Not like a normal floatation device heavy, heavier than that! It is HUGE which he was hoping for & he absolutely LOVES using it! Best $30 ever spent on a floatie!”

This was a gift for a friend who was throwing a pool party. It was a hit and everyone wanted to try to see if they could fit on it. Blowing it up was a bit difficult, but easy with a ball airpump. My friend has had it for over a month and has used it daily and it is still holding up well.

I am Huge Titanic fan and I bought this instantly upon seeing it . Yes, Jack could have fit. But the question is with the waves would buoyancy would it work? Oh well my Heart Will Go On.

 There were a few negatives as well. Some said it did not hold air long, changed color when out in the sun, and was defective. The UK Sun did an article about it. James Cameron did a test to see if two could fit on the door. The short answer-yes, but just long enough for a lifeboat to reach them. But why speculate when you can have your own inflatable Titanic door to answer that question for yourself. And I bet the company has made some decent money on this product. Yet it once again trivializes the fact that over 1,500 died on that cold night. If only they did have some flotation devices like this, some might have survived.

And then when tries to pull out the box with the ring, it goes flying landing into the water, sending him into the water to get it back. He got it, got back in, and proposed soaking wet to his bride-to-be who was laughing and accepted it.

110 years later: The Titanic’s impact on Maine

Malcolm Smith, the author of “Mainers on the Titanic,” told NEWS CENTER Maine around 14 people from the Pine Tree State were on the vessel when it struck that fatal iceberg. Half of them survived, he said, most of them women. “It broke down that the females from Maine survived. Men didn’t, generally speaking,” Smith said. Of the Mainers that were on the Titanic, most were from Mount Desert Island. They were families that came to Maine for the summer and could spend half a year in the state. “Employers, neighbors, friends. They were part of our fabric,” Smith said.

I have never been so emotional and fascinated while visiting an exhibition in my life. In the depths of history or in terms of Titanic’s historic tragedy, it was a truly remarkable experience.

Titanic warship shipyard forced to delay essential projects after troubled forecast

It was only months ago things were looking rosy for Harland & Wolff with new shipbuilding contracts. According to the article, the main reason to delay many of the projects is to difficulty in obtaining parts. This echoes what is happening in a lot of industries today where parts needed have become difficult to get due to a number of factors related to the pandemic shipping issues that have not been fully restored, the war in the Ukraine, or simply the skyrocketing costs of many needed items. Harland is delaying the contracts, but it is hurting their bottom line. Some are concerned it may make it harder to pay off their debts leading to concern amongst investors.

Happy Monday and Titanic News

Halloween is firmly behind us and November is in front of us. Standard time has returned so its gets darker early and we have longer nights. A traditional time for warm slippers, sweaters, and if you have it, a log fire with hot cider. Not a lot of Titanic news but there are a few items you might find of interest.

Titanic: The Exhibition will be coming to London in February 2022. The exhibition has toured Europe and America  is different from the one down by Premier Exhibitions. “The Exhibition promises a fresh take on the ever-magnetic story of the world’s most famous (and infamous) ocean liner, which sunk in April 1912 on its maiden voyage, en route to New York. Alongside recreations of the ship’s cabins, radio room, and iconic staircase, 200 original objects — including personal letters and keepsakes — combine with an audio guide, for an altogether immersive-looking show (hopefully not quite as immersive as the Titanic episode of Rick and Morty, though).”

A Titanic Exhibition Is Coming To London – With Replica Interiors Of The Doomed Ship (Londonist, 27 Oct 2021)

According to AOL News, it appears construction on the Chinese Titanic replica has restarted. Several weeks ago I posted news that construction had apparently stopped some years ago. The reasons were not clear but possibly due to money drying up. The replica would be docked at a theme park and would double as a hotel and a historic attraction. The AOL news notes this:

Drone footage filmed in the county of Daying in Sichuan Province on October 21 shows a 269.06-metre-long and 28.19-metre-wide life-size replica of the RMS Titanic ship replica temporarily dormant on the dock gathering rust. 

Now perhaps they have heard construction is about to begin again, but at the time the footage was made was still dormant. China is suffering through an economic crisis of its own right now, so it is possible that has thrown a monkey-wrench into it. So far I have not found any news articles that indicate or confirm this report. It would not be surprising if the company behind it send out something to news agencies hoping to keep interest alive. Until we see construction, there is not any news to report.

Titanic News-Titanic Exhibition Comes To Poland’s Kraków

The building reflects Soviet Era hospitality and construction. The large structure was once considered futuristic and a shining triumph of Communism. The hotel was one of the most modern buildings in Krakow in 1989 when it finally opened. It was big and was openly derided for its size. And that it looks like cinder blocks on top of Lincoln logs. Today it is used as large billboard but the ground floor is where a trendy bar is located.

According to Radio Poland, Titanic: The Exhibition is at Kraków’s Forum Hotel. According to the news report:

The exhibition also documents the stories of a group of passengers with Polish names such as Ostrowska, Paw?owski and Paw?owicz. The victims of the tragedy included a Polish Roman Catholic priest named Józef Montwi??, who was traveling to the United States to take over a parish in the state of Massachusetts. He is said to have refused a place on a lifeboat.
