Titanic Saucers Fetch £46,800 at Auction

Three Titanic saucers made for RMS Titanic have been sold at auction for £46,800 ($62,593). Made for First Class passengers, the Copeland Spode demitasse saucers were made to be used on Titanic but were never put on board for its maiden voyage. Cheffins estimated they would sell between £1,000-2,000 but a California based Titanic collector paid extra to secure the saucers.

Tony Probst, an avid collector of Titanic memorabilia who bought the saucers, said that when they came up for auction “I suppose I really didn’t have much choice.” Brett Tryner, director at Cheffins speculates that these saucers were part of a reserve made by White Star. “We can only assume that some china was kept back in reserve to then top up supplies should there have been breakages en route.” Probst states he intends to publicly display the saucers along with the rest of his collection.
